The Missoula Round Robin Quilters have updated pictures at our website http://quiltroundrobin.wordpress.com/ . Come see our latest round! We have one more round to go. It has been fun to try new designs and build upon the theme in the center and what the others before us have done. We have been surpristed at our talent and designs and love what we have created. Jardín de México
Finished at last! This is the quilt I have been working on for the past 4 months for the Concurso de Bernina here in Mexico. Only requirement is thst quilts be between 1-2 yards square and have a Mexico theme. This one was a challenge for me for many reasons. First challenge was figuring out what I could make with fabric I have. That in part determined the color scheme. Only fabric I had to purchase was the Spice Shade Cascade for the doors. I used two of the wolors for the front and two for the back.
The two layer concept took a bit of thinking and I changed designs several times in trying to figure out how to attach doors so all layers would look nice (scratch the velcro), the doors would be removable (scratch sewing them into seam). finally arrived at bottons -- all 42 of them and almost as many buttonholes. Had a bit of a glitch when I lost the manual to my sewing machine and couldn't figure out how to make the buttonholes. Saved by the internet!
Next task was the garden itself. All the azulejos (tiles) are colored with crayons. I couldn't face the idea of appliquing all those tiny pieces. Each tile is 4" square and design is from a real tile. Had trouble getting the fountain right and after looking at lots of fountains and taking lots of pictures finally drew one I could live with. Water is angelina fiber. This is my first attempt at using it -- thanks Peggy!
Our little Mexico City Quilt Guild is having a quilt show this weekend so it will hang there first and then go to the Concurso the beginning of November. It will be interesting to see how the quilt show works. There are only about 10 active members of the guild so we are doing it all, no committees on this one. A few posters were distributes but I'm not sure where. I did post a notice at the embassy. No quilt magazines here to use for publicity. The show will be at the Anglican Church which has services in English and I suspect that will be our biggest audience. The show opens Friday night with a cocktail party for family and friends.
It will be a busy weekend but I still will be thinking of you guys and envying those of you at quilt retreat. I keep telling myself I'm going to get back for one but life keeps interfering.
My next task, well actually I have two, is preparing to teach a class on the French Rose pattern to guild here and secondly to make a wedding quilt for my son and his fiance. That will have to be finished by mid June.
Guild has really been pressuring me to teach lots of classes. I taught a design class in SEpt " How to make a quilt Mexican." That was a fun one. I started out with simply using fabric with a Mexican theme then moved to suggesting traditional quilt blocks that are Mexican. I was surprised at how many I could find. Then we started to get more creative. I gave them log cabin blocks as asked them how to make it Mexican. My idea was to use pastel colores because many of the housed are cement painted in these colores. I made the centers black because all the houses have water storage on the rooftops in black barrels. finally we looked at all the Mexican designs in pyramids, tiles, rugs etc. I think I left them wowed. These are everyday things to them so they don't see them as potential material for quilts.
Love to you all

Guild member, Angela Rozo of Columbia, South America was recently diagnosed with a cancerous tumor. She's in the hospital in Bogota. Her address is : Carrera 12 #136-06, Bogota, Colombia, South America.
Updade as of Thurs Oct 9, a note from her husband:
Hi, Sue
I thought that Angela would have gotten her package on Monday, however, I did not plan on the government here wanting an import tax!!! Anyway, her sister in law paid it and got the package on Tuesday. She dropped it off at the hospital on Wednesday. Angela was having a bad day and it sure turned it around. She stared at the quilt all afternoon as I hung it over the door. I read her all the book and cards and it all improved her attitude. She will write you an email when she can, but she wanted me to let you know how much she enjoyed everything in the package (and from me too...it was great!!)
Angela is getting better each day. She still has lots of pain but I think they are going to get her up to take a few steps tomorrow. I think she will be released the early part of next week. I will write more when I get a chance.
thanks again for the package and being such a great friend to her,
Jerry
Angela can get emails at dirnberger@aol.com
